About

Mr. Yapari is a local grassroots human rights activist based at Porgera, PNG. He has been to local schools in PNG and had held several Senior Positions with many companies. His latest position that he held before resigning to become a human rights activist was as an Operations Manager of a cleaning and janitorial company contracted to the Porgera Gold Mine.

His passion to become a human rights activists was beefed up when his only younger brother, Late Jerry Yapari was crushed to death by rocks deliberately pushed by Barrick Gold Corp’s Security Guards at the PJV Open Pit while Late Jerry was panning for gold bearing ores.

Further, this and other similar human rights abuses done by the Barrick’s hired Security Guards and PNG Police Mobil Squads of shootings, beatings, rapes/gang rapes, forced evictions of villagers and tortures and illegal detentions have also motivated him to the position where is now.

Mr. Yapari is currently the Public & Executive Officer of a local human rights organization, the Akali Tange Association Inc.

The association’s membership has grown from 200 to 10, 000. The members includes the custodians of the deaths, victims of forced evictions, rapes/gang rapes, physical assaults, illegal detainees and tortures.

The members are from the Special Mining Leased and Leased for Mining Purposes Areas, Porgera, Laiagam, Kandep, Wabag as well as from the nearby province, the Hela and also from other parts of PNG.
